It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah(may Allah be pleased with him) in a Marfu report: **“Count the days of Shaban for the sake of Ramadan.”** (Narrated by At-Tirmidhi). This hadith was classed as authentic by Al-Albani in Sahih At-Tirmidhi (678).

Dua while sighting the MOON

Al-Tirmidhi (3451) narrated from Talhah ibn ‘Ubayd-Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw the new moon, he would say,

“Allahummaahillahu ‘alayna bi’l-yumni wa’l-iman wa’l-salamah wa’l-islam. Rabbiy wa rabbuka Allah”

(O Allah, make the new moon rise on us with blessing, faith, safety and Islam. My Lord and Your Lord is Allah)

Three Types of Fasts

Imam Ghazali mentions that there are 3 types of fasts.

  1. Fast in name only, in which a person fulfills the legal requirements of a fast (i.e. refrains from eating, drinking, and intercourse) but doesn’t abstain from sins. This fast may or may not be accepted.
  2. Fast of the general population, in which they fulfill the requirements of a fast and also abstain from bad deeds, but return to sinning when Ramadan ends. There is some hope that their fast will be accepted.
  3. Fast of the Saliheen, the righteous ones, in which all legal and spiritual aspects of fasting are fulfilled. This is the type of fast we should all strive to attain. There are two ways this can be achieved: by eating only Halal food and eating less. </aside>
